A great black and white documentary about the recording and subsequent release of their album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.
This movie has a lot of great live performances from the band. The visual style is quite attractive and well stylized. The story is compelling since it incorporates the bands internal conflicts, member quirks and their struggles to release the album.
This movie is probably reserved for fans of the band, but there is still a lot of great music and documentation here to entertain a newcomer.
Once
This move got a lot of deserved attention from major theaters. It is technically a musical, but I would not consider that too sincerely. Mainly because the characters never randomly burst into song in a way that would require a large leap of the imagination to believe.
I love the amateur feel of the cinematography and the realness of the characters makes the idea that you are watching this love story unfold in front of you, truly believable.
The musical performances are quite memorable and the story that goes along with them really cements them in your mind. Overall this is definitely one of the best love stories of our generation.
